Women at Rocket get organized during the 2014 Leadership Summit

As you’ve read last week, the 2014 Rocket Leadership Summit brought together 270 Rocketeers from all over the world to celebrate 25 years of success, and discuss how we’ll achieve even greater success in our next 25 years. We focused on three themes during the week: Customer, Community, and Category.

The kickoff for the Summit began Monday evening, and as I looked around at all the faces of Rocket, I noticed something different–the women in the room! I had actually asked my colleagues, “who are these women?” Were they spouses? There are only five women in the Atlanta office where I work, so the number of women in attendance was refreshing to me. I started introducing myself to some of the women and found a variety of titles and fields: sales, engineering, finance, and marketing.

Robin Barley-Waegener, an Account Executive at Rocket, had the same thoughts. We talked a lot about what community meant to us at Rocket, but we forgot such an important one: women at Rocket! After all, we are a community too. Robin took the reigns and organized a “Women at Rocket” event at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), just a few blocks from our hotel.

We gathered at the ICA and shared some of our experiences working as women in such a male-dominated sector. I remember thinking  “wow, these women are incredible!” They are brilliant, capable, and contributing so much to Rocket with their talents. It’s encouraging to see. Everyone had great ideas about how to cultivate our community. We will be creating a group on Yammer (our internal social networking platform) for Women at Rocket to share more stories, and getting involved with Dress for Success, a global organization that helps disadvantaged women enter the workforce.

I am excited for what’s to come and feel lucky to be working with each and every one of these women. And I am looking forward to getting to know even more in this growing community at Rocket!

I think this is a wonderful initiative. But hey, don’t discriminate against the men folk out there. I’m sure our male Rocketeers would want to weigh in on the conversation.

I agree with Kathy but think the approach needs to be cautious in that you celebrate accomplishments, rather than gender.
