Happy Birthday to Rocket!
Thanks to the International Date Line, I get to be one of the first Rocketeers to celebrate a milestone birthday for Rocket Software. That’s because I’m in our office in Sydney, Australia, right now as part of an extended trip to meet with our customers and partners and Rocketeers. So while it’s still April 15 in most of the world, I’m already enjoying April 16 – which is 25 years to the day since Johan Gedda and I launched Rocket and I sat down to write some code that turned out to be the first product that Rocket ever sold.
Back then, the idea of an office in Sydney wasn’t even on my radar. In fact, the idea of having an office anywhere seemed like a reach – Johan and I spent most of 1990 working out of my house near Boston, and when we finally moved into our first space it made it feel like we had a “real” company. Today, 25 years later, we have over 30 offices on four continents, including our brand-new ones in Tokyo, Prague, and Silicon Valley.
In many ways our physical expansion reflects our intellectual growth over the past 25 years. We started with one desk, one computer, one idea for one product, and soon had our very first customer. Today we have hundreds of products, tens of thousands of customers and partners, 10s of millions of end users, and over 1200 Rocketeers all around the globe. We help companies in just about every industry solve their major technical and business problems while treating them with humanity rather than as a line on an income statement or balance sheet. And we all share common values that keep us aligned and focused as One Rocket when it comes to developing software that matters and putting you first.
I can’t begin to describe how great these past 25 years have been. And we are already well on our way to having an even greater next 25 years. So as you log into your computers and mobile phones today, no matter what time zone you’re in, I invite you to join me in raising a glass and toasting what we’ve done and where we’ve been…and where we are going. To all of our customers and partners, to all of our advisors and vendors, and to all of our amazing Rocketeers: Thank you for making Rocket Software what we are today and what we will be tomorrow. Happy Birthday. Onward and upward!
