At Rocket, we’re focused on helping people solve problems, and making it easier for them to get their jobs done. Ease of use is something we spend a lot of time on, and while most of our products are focused on IT teams, a few years ago we started to ask ourselves if we could extend that focus to the people the IT teams serve–the business users.
That was the idea behind our newest product, Rocket Discover, a do-it-yourself data visualization solution for executives, managers and analysts that makes it easy to understand what your data is actually telling you so you can make more effective business decisions in today’s fast-paced marketplace. Executives and managers can access company information and easily create dashboards that expose trends, outliers, historical details and other information. Rocket Discover’s intuitive canvas makes it easy to drill down into information, which is displayed in colorful charts and graphs.
This focus on self-service is at the core of the product according to Bob Potter, SVP and General Manager of Business Information and Analytics. Before joining Rocket, Bob ran business development for QlikTech, a data visualization and discovery vendor, and was co-founder and CEO of Expressor, which QlikTech acquired. With 33 years in the software industry, Bob explained that “I had seen how some companies don’t put customers first with their visualization tools. They don’t build the architecture behind the scenes that accesses company data and gets it ready to be analyzed. Other companies feel that’s the customer’s responsibility, so customers must buy a costly data prep tool, and rely on IT to make it work.”
Rocket Discover was built to provide a true end-to-end discovery solution for businesses. As Bob explains “We prepare our own data sets, which is a fundamental difference with competitors. No database administrators are needed. Andy Youniss, our CEO, is a great example of the kind of user we’re trying to help. Andy wants to access company data himself, and he wants to prepare his own dashboards. He doesn’t want to go anywhere else.”
With Rocket Discover, Andy (and other business users inside Rocket) can do just that; it’s a big step forward for large enterprise companies that use mainframes to run their business. Rocket Discover can access critical data on the mainframe when other vendors can’t, and run ad-hoc reports without the help of IT. To self-serve the mainframe community is a huge leap. “No one has ever done that before,” explained Bob.
