Rocket Software Expands Capability for z/OS System Monitoring with Rocket MXI Version 6.2

Rocket Software has enhanced and expanded its system monitoring capability for z/OS environments with Version 6.2 of Rocket Mainstar MXI for z/OS.

Rocket MXI is a low cost, small footprint monitor that gives system programmers easy access to critical information about their active z/OS system.  It provides a comprehensive view of important information through web or traditional z/OS interfaces. MXI is designed to reduce time spent on monitoring and auditing and provide a better understanding of the source of system-wide issues to allow for faster response to those issues. Common issues identified by MXI can be related to utilization, performance, and capacity.

MXI z/OS Capabilities


Version 6.2 offers several key enhancements to allow system programmers improved capability to understand their z/OS environment and take appropriate action before issues affect productivity:

Easier Views

  • More consolidated, efficient, and easier views
    • Sysplex-wide displays for address spaces, CICS regions, DB2, TCP/IP, and MQ.
    • Bird’s eye view of DASD Subsystems.
    • Enqueue statistics for active address spaces.
    • Latch contention information.
    • WLM performance index summary.
    • Show TCP/IP port activity and Telnet connection history.
    • Option to include or exclude MQ subsystems from monitoring using scopes.
    • Ability to browse MQ queue for message data and the ability to include or exclude MQ subsystems from monitoring using scopes.
    • Monitor VSAM file activity.
    • Custom RACF fields for user and group profiles, and specific displays for PROGRAM class profiles.
  • Improved and easier navigationEasier Navigation
    • New “ZOOM” command allows forwards and backwards navigation in a results set in zoomed mode.
    • Ranged line command applies MXI line commands to multiple rows in a display.
    • Field level help with “FHELP” command on PFKey or “FIELD()” keyword on the MXI help command.
  • Increased level of information
    • JES2 information displays now show job status and output, input queue, job class definitions, node information, spool volumes, and job status.Increased Information
  • Increased efficiency for added computing capacity and lower overall costs
    • zIIP offload support extended to include TCB/SRB hybrid processing for alerts and certain discovery actions.
    • Alert processing is decentralized giving each extension its own alert processing agent.
    • Increased Capacity and Lower CostsRationalization of IDCAMS parameter in the allocation of DCM files, limit DCM file allocation size, and enable control of the size of DCM file secondary allocations.
  • Easier installation and deployment
    • Replacement of MXI XCF structures with signaling services

Rocket Mainstar MXI for z/OS is designed to increase efficiency and save costs through proactive system, storage, and network monitoring. Version 6.2 further optimizes the time and efforts of systems programmers and administrators.  General availability for MXI 6.2 is July 13, 2015.
