Rocket Software would like to take a moment to celebrate the life and contributions of George Land; a valuable partner, community member, and friend. Sadly, George lost his struggle with a brain tumor and passed away on November 24. George co-founded Stratum Associates with Stuart Shepherd in the early 1990s, based on previous work done with System Builder and UniData. Stratum Associates merged with APT Solutions of London, UK, and ever since, George was involved with everything from the ground up on how APT was built. APT provides membership software to a variety of industries, and has become Rocket’s top MultiValue distributor in the EMEA region largely thanks to his stewardship.

George was always one of our more vocal distributors, which is great, because it always pushed us to improve our database and tools and moving the technology forward. Many in the industry have worked with George for 20+ years and it’s obvious that he was well respected and liked. Susie Siegesmund, former Director of U2, worked closely with him and shares that “George was a solid partner, absolute gentleman, and a friend. He will be missed.”

Stuart Shepherd was one of those closest to George, being co-directors of APT for many years, and shared that “George was such a stable person to have a business relationship with. He was honest, caring and had a high level of integrity” along with being “one of the brightest people I have ever met.”

Stuart let us know about a few of George’s favorite things:

·         Being married to his wife Angela
·         Cars – As a member of a car club, he would often turn up in some fantastic machine, ranging from a Lamborghini to a “girly” Bentley convertible
·         Dogs – He and Angela loved being surrounded by their furry friends
·         Photography – His office was adorned with pictures he took of polar bears, lions, or elephants from one of his memorable trips
·         Last but not least, George loved his work. He found it rewarding and demanding at the same time, which shows why he was such a great success

Always a big proponent of our U2 databases and tools technology, he helped build APT to become an invaluable part of the Rocket Software story. In honor of George, APT Solutions is planning a MultiValue Developer competition to help foster the adoption of our technology. The competition will challenge first or second year University students to develop something of value to the community, using Rocket MultiValue Personal Edition products. Rocket Software will be proud to help judge the final submissions and also support the winning team in coming to Denver or Waltham to spend a week learning more about our technology, company, and culture. The George Land Memorial Developer Competition would be a fitting way to remember him and all he’s done for the MultiValue community.

If you feel like giving in his memory, George’s family requests that you make a donation to Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. This charity is special to them as it helped the entire family during his illness and could use the ongoing support. If you would like to donate, you can do so at http://www.justgiving.com/GeorgeLand.

Rest in peace, George, you will be missed.
