Webinar: Top 5 Ways to Ensure Modernization Success for Host-Based Applications | Q&A
In our recent webinar, “Top 5 Ways to Ensure Modernization Success for Host-Based Applications,” Sales Specialist Robin Barley-Wagner, and Director of Sales Engineering Robert Young, discussed considerations for successful modernization projects. A recording of the session is available here if you’d like to view it again or share with colleagues.
There are no hard-and-fast rules about what to modernize, or where to start, but there are at least five elements we always see affecting successful modernization. Those are:
1. Accurately identifying the problems you are trying to solve
2. Focusing on the user experience, not the UI
3. Reusing application logic, rather than rewriting it
4. Simplifying management of clients and services
5. Organizational commitment
Robin and Robert presented discussed above elements in detail, and spoke about the success of our customers in these areas. You can read more about in this blog post.
At the end of the webinar, Robin and Robert addressed some audience questions:
Q1.) Can APIs that are from the mainframe be used with APIs that are not on the mainframe platform?
Yes! Some people think, “well great, my apps are all API-enabled, but what can I do with them?” Tools like Rocket API let you create a composite flow of APIs, so not only can you work with APIs built for host systems, but you can call and use them in a 3rd-party workflow.
Q2.) What developer skills are required to use these types of API-building tools?
At a minimum, the developer should know where the host-based application logic lives. But they don’t need to know anything about modifying the original source code. This (and a basic knowledge of APIs) is all you need to get started.
Q3.) What are developers using to build the UIs?
The nature of APIs make them extremely flexible, so UIs can be built with all kinds of tools. Angular, qooxdoo, .Net, open source languages…just to name a few! There are many languages developers can use to build UIs that can consume API data and logic. The sky’s the limit when it comes to UI development.
Q4.) Does Rocket provide API development, integration, or modernization services, or do we rely on others?
It’s a bit of both. We provide services to help get modernization projects started using in-house talent, but we do use partners for larger projects. Ultimately, we try to train your team to master the tools—but we can also augment your staff.
