This year, a record-breaking number of Rocket employees were named as 2020 IBM Champions—13 to be exact. To celebrate our ongoing partnership with IBM, and our dedication to innovation, legacy technologies and legendary results, we want to highlight them.
Over the next weeks, we will count down to IBM THINK with each of the 2020 Champions, and celebrate what we love about our partnership with IBM!
Name: Tim Willging
Title: Distinguished Engineer, Z Systems Architect
Length of time at Rocket Software: 15 years
What it means to be an IBM Champion: It is awesome to be recognized as a leader who helps customers understand and exploit IBM technology! Ultimately, we are helping organizations gain competitive advantage and, in turn, provide competitive differentiation and value to their customers!
What I love about IBM: I love IBM because they invented the mainframe and so many great technologies over such a long period of time! There are so many great people and engineers at IBM and that investment has enabled them to stay relevant in a fast-changing industry for such a long time.
What I love about the IBM/Rocket Software partnership: At Rocket, we love partnering with IBM in its mission to modernize the mainframe. By that, I mean making it easy to operate, interface with, and manage by leveraging modern processes and technologies. This ensures that the mainframe will remain a cornerstone of many organizations’ IT departments for many years to come.
How do IBM products improve everyday lives? The mainframe is so central to the banking industry as it is incredibly secure, reliable, and scalable which makes it capable of handling the great numbers of daily transactions required. The hybrid could systems (which are grounded in the mainframe) deployed in this industry provide some of the best fraud detection available. Getting notifications on my mobile that alert me to real or potential fraud gives a real sense of peace knowing my accounts are protected!
Favorite IBM product: IBMs flagship mainframe operating system z/OS. It is so fundamentally sound and provides the foundation of security, reliability and scalability for many of the great subsystems (Db2, CICS, WebSphere, etc) that run critical systems for so many companies around the world.
Favorite IBM project: Modernization of the mainframe if my favorite project. Bringing modern languages and tools to the mainframe to make it super easy and familiar is one of the most important large projects going on at IBM now. Zowe is a big part of this and really helps make the mainframe more accessible! Be sure to check it out at zowe.org!
