Rocket Dalian Office Injects New Talent to MV R&D Team
Many of you know the Rocket MultiValue R&D people that develop the MV application platform. Today, I’m introducing you to a new team member via an interview I conducted with Senior Software Engineering Manager, Guocheng (Gerald) Sui.
Kathy: Hi Gerald. It was so nice meeting you while you were in Denver a few weeks ago. For those inside and outside of Rocket who have not had the pleasure of meeting you, please tell us a few things about you and your role here at Rocket.
Gerald: Hi Kathy, thanks and it was a great pleasure to meet you in Denver. To start with, I joined Rocket in our Dalian, China office at the end of May 2018, as a Senior Software Engineering Manager for the Rocket MultiValue Application Platform, aka UniVerse, UniData and D3.
Before joining Rocket, I worked for IBM, Infosys and Fidelity Investments over the past 13 years.
Kathy: As we hear from many of our MultiValue (MV) customers and partners, many people who have spent a majority if not all their career in MV are reaching retirement age. We are experiencing this at Rocket too within the MV R&D lab. Tell us how the team you’re building is going to carry on the development of the MV application platform.
Gerald: Right, we enjoyed working closely with a few MV U.S engineers before they retired in September. We’d like to wish them all well and hope they enjoy their retirement.
In the meanwhile, I started with a team of 13 engineers and have grown the team to 35 engineers as of today.
On average, my team has seven to eight years of experience, are skilled in C++, algorithms, data structures and other technologies that are required to work in MultiValue. This team is our next-generation of engineers for MV.
The best part is, our seasoned engineers in the U.S are sharing their rich experience and knowledge with the entire Dalian team. As this knowledge transfer takes place, the Dalian team continues to get more involved in new features and fixing bugs.
Kathy: I understand you’re working on improvements in Continuous Integration and Deployment in an Agile environment. Can you tell us how this will accelerate fixes and enhancements?
Gerald: Speed to market is very important. As a user, nobody enjoys waiting for their requests to show up in a product. Continuous integration along with automated build and automated test will help us constantly test our new changes and detect anomalies at an early stage. This approach will greatly reduce integration problems and allow big, distributed teams to work more efficiently together. As a result, we can fix issues and finish enhancements more quickly resulting in a high-quality product.
Kathy: Can you highlight one or two achievements you and the team have completed?
Gerald: While we are a relatively new team, I can point to two completed projects.
- The Dalian team has assumed responsibility for UniVerse and UniData security; Jing Cui visited the Dalian team and did a through transfer of his security knowledge before retiring.
- The Dalian team is also mastering other key modules, such as BASIC, Python and Triggers along with beginning to dive deep into Locking, Physical File Structures, Shared Memory and Windows amongst others. I’d like to extend a big “thank you” to my team (in both the U.S and China) for their dedication! And a special “great work” to the Dalian team on absorbing the new knowledge.
Kathy: What are you most looking forward to as you and your team continue to develop and enhance the Rocket MV application platform?
Gerald: One of Rocket’s core values is always putting partners and customers first. So, we will continue to develop and maintain our relationship with partners and customers through:
- Delivering on their requests more quickly
- Optimizing and modernizing our products
- Helping our customers solve their MV staffing challenges by adding innovative features to the MultiValue products, making MV attractive and relevant for today’s talent
Kathy: Thanks so much for letting us get to know you through this interview. As Rocket continues to grow as a global company, I look forward to working with you and the team and teaming up with you on a second blog post.
